Make your own font production

Learn to work beyond the design stage where aspects related to functionality are refined. Learn to generate fonts that work correctly when installed on any computer equipment.

Objective. The participants will have an overview of a workflow appropriate to their needs to produce their own typefaces. They will be able to generate functional fonts for different platforms.

  • Review the font formats
  • Know the tools: FontTools and Fontmake and other Open-source libraries
  • Generate functional fonts for Adobe or Microsoft software
  • Edit OpenType features from a text file
  • Edit the font info of your UFO file
  • Generate your webfonts
  • Find out what hinting is and how to use auto hinting
  • Visualize the function of the different OpenType tables.
  • Access links where the information is stored

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Elí Castellanos is a freelance typeface designer and font developer. He runs Cocijotype Foundry.  For five years he worked as a font developer at studio Dalton Maag, in London, UK.

Graduated from Expert class in Type Design by the Plantin Institute of Typography, at the Plantin-Moretus Museum, Antwerp. He has also taken the python workshops from designdesign.space with Petr van Blokland. His work has been awarded with the Gold Prize in Morisawa Type Design Competition 2014, Certificate of Excellence in Type Design by Communication Arts Typography Competition 2011, and selected in the Biennials “Tipos Latinos” 2006, 2010, and 2014.

He has given typeface design workshops in independent spaces as well as in the National Center of the Arts, Mexico, and the “Anahuac del Sur” University, Mexico. He has participated as a speaker at the ATypI 2018 Antwerp, Tipografía México 2018 Monterrey, TypeLab 2020 and 2021 online events, and ATypI 2020 online event. He currently teaches typography and typeface design at the Faculty of Arts and Design of the National University, Mexico.
